Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a common treatment technique that physical therapists use to reduce pain, improve mobility, and speed up recovery. IASTM works like other massage techniques, but specialized instruments are used in place of a physical therapist’s hands. The instruments are either plastic or stainless steel tools designed to contour the shape of the body. As the instruments are moved over the affected area, the action will help restore the tissue’s ability to slide over each other for normal movement and range of motion, decreasing adhesions between layers of tissue.
What types of injuries can IASTM help?
Anyone with pain or injury to soft tissue structures such as muscle, tendon, or ligament can benefit from IASTM. Some of the most common conditions treated with IASTM include:
- Excessive scar tissue
- Tendinopathy including Achilles tendon pain, golfer’s and tennis elbow
- Muscle strains
- Ligament sprains
- Plantar fasciitis
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Carpal tunnel
- Shin splints
What are the benefits of IASTM?
IASTM has been proven to help people with limited range of motion, pain with movement, motor control, and muscle recruitment issues. Some of the many benefits of IASTM include the following:
- Boost in cellular activity
- Increased circulation to affected areas
- Increased mobility
- Reduced inflammation
